On the last day of 1941, Admiral Chester Nimitz took command of what was left of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Fighting defensively, he bought time for the new fleet under construction in American shipyards. By 1943 the Pacific offensive that would reach Japan itself in 1945 was under way.
